Morgan opened her eyes and coughed. Water came out of her lungs, and she rolled onto her side. A tiny wave crashed onto the beach and washed over her, and she spluttered as she tried to keep the water out of her mouth.

Above, the sun beat down hard, and she tried to make her bearings.

“Here, I have you.” Strong arms pulled her out of the surf and dragged her up onto the beach.

Morgan lay on her back for a moment, breathing hard, and went to wipe her eyes but only succeeded in getting more sand in them.

“You’ll be fine.”

The voice, one she would recognize from anywhere, surprised her, and a jolt of joy ran through her. “Nathan!” She rolled onto her side to stare at him in disbelief.

“I am not your brother.” Nathan sat cross-legged in the sand, dressed in a sailor’s clothes.

“I don’t understand.” She sat up and looked around me. The white sand, palm trees behind her, and the blue ocean looked somewhat familiar. “Where am I?”

“You’re safe.” Nathan fiddled with a piece of straw that he had picked up from the beach. “But I am not your brother. I am only what you remember him to be.”

“Then you must be Kanaloa, and I humble myself before you.” Morgan bent over and stretched her arms out toward him.

“Do not mock me as I know that you would sooner put a bullet in Kanaloa than bow to him in such a way.” He flicked the piece of straw, and it landed on her knee.

“Then I’ll stop pretending if you tell me what’s going on.” She sat back up and dusted sand off the palms of her hands. “How did I get here?”

“You are still in the water communing with the great white whale. We do not have much time, and I am here to warn you.” Nathan grinned at me. “You never did like listening to me, but now you have no choice.”

“If you’re not my brother, then stop playing games with me, and tell me what I need to know.” She cut him off short.

He laughed. “Just like I remember you.” He folded his hands in his lap and said, “I never did get a chance to tell you how much I love you.”

Nathan’s expression changed, and he leaned toward her and reached out to put his hand on her knee. She froze and did not pull away.

“But it’s too late for all of that now, all the times that you and I would work together. It’s all gone. Do you remember the time that we worked together to make the pie for Mother’s birthday and we nearly burned the kitchen down?”

Tears came unbidden to her eyes, and she nodded in agreement, unable to talk from the lump in her throat.

“Or the time when Fluffy got out and you cried all night long. I snuck outside and found her. She had gotten stuck under the house and I—”

“You brought her back to me, and it was one of the happiest days of my childhood.
